Everything below is in the shipping Android app. There are no achievements, no lifetime statistics and no online play — the game does a small number of things and does them properly.
Two players on one device
Pass the phone back and forth. Turns alternate between X and O automatically, and the status line always shows whose move it is.
Round-by-round score tracking
A scoreboard above the grid counts X wins, O wins and draws as you play. Restart a round to keep the running score, or reset it to zero whenever you want a clean slate.

How to play tic tac toe
Tic tac toe is a two-player game on a 3×3 grid. Players take turns marking empty squares, one using X and the other using O, with X always going first. The first player to line up three of their own marks in a row, column or diagonal wins. If all nine squares fill with no such line, the game is a draw.
The rules, step by step
- Set up the grid. Tic tac toe is played on a 3×3 grid of nine empty squares. One player uses X, the other uses O.
- X goes first. The player using X places a mark in any empty square. In Tic Tac Toe, X always starts, and against the computer you are X.
- Take turns. Players alternate, placing one mark per turn in any square that is still empty. You cannot move a mark once it is placed, and you cannot overwrite your opponent.
- Make a line of three. The first player to get three of their own marks in a straight line — a row, a column, or either diagonal — wins immediately.
- Or fill the board. If all nine squares are filled and no one has a line of three, the round is a draw. Nobody scores.
How you win
There are exactly eight winning lines on a 3×3 grid: three rows, three columns and two diagonals. Because the centre square belongs to four of those eight lines, and each corner belongs to three, the centre is the strongest opening move and the corners come next. The four edge squares belong to only two lines each.
Winning against someone paying attention takes a fork: a move that creates two separate threats at once. Your opponent can only block one of them, so the other wins on your next turn. Blocking a single threat is easy; being forced to block two is not.
Why so many games end in a draw
Tic tac toe is a solved game. If both players play perfectly from the first move, the result is always a draw — which is why the Hard opponent in Tic Tac Toe can never be beaten, only held. Wins happen when somebody misses a threat or hands over a fork.
