Terms of use

What you can expect from Tic Tac Toe, and what we ask in return. Written in plain English, because nobody reads the other kind.

Summary

Tic Tac Toe is free to play, on this website and as an Android app. Play as much as you like. Please do not redistribute the app or republish the written guides as your own. The software is provided as it is, without a warranty, and we cannot promise it will always be available.

1. Acceptable use

You may play the browser game on this site and install the Android application on your own devices, free of charge, without registering and without any usage limit.

We ask that you do not:

There is nothing to break in the game itself: it runs entirely in your browser or on your phone. Modifying your own copy for your own amusement is your business.

2. Game availability

We aim to keep this website online continuously, but we cannot promise it. Hosting fails, domains expire, providers have outages, and maintenance sometimes needs the site to be down. This service is offered free of charge and comes with no uptime commitment of any kind.

The Android application is different in a useful way: once installed, it runs entirely on your device and needs no connection. A copy you have already installed will keep working regardless of anything that happens to this website.

3. No guarantee of uninterrupted service

To be explicit: we do not guarantee that the website or the application will be uninterrupted, timely, error-free, or that any defect will be corrected. We may change, suspend or discontinue any part of either at any time, with or without notice.

If the browser game stops working for you, the most likely causes are a browser extension blocking its script, JavaScript being disabled, or an unusually old browser. The support page covers the common cases.

4. Browser game limitations

The version on this site has real constraints worth knowing about:

5. Mobile application availability

The Android application is distributed through Google Play under the package name com.shahbaz.tictactoe. Google Play's own terms apply to its distribution and installation, in addition to these terms.

We do not control Google Play. Availability in your country, compatibility with your device and the minimum supported Android version are determined by the store listing and by Google's policies. We may publish updates, and may at some point stop publishing them.

There is currently no iOS release. If you find "Tic Tac Toe" on another platform or another store, it is not ours.

6. Intellectual property

The Tic Tac Toe name, the application and its source code, the icon and artwork, the board diagrams, and the written articles on this site are owned by the developer, Syed Shahbaz Hussain.

The game of tic tac toe itself is not. The rules are centuries old and in the public domain, and nothing on this site claims otherwise. You are free to play it, teach it, write about it, and build your own version. What we ask you not to copy is our specific expression of it — our code, our artwork and our words.

Quoting a paragraph of an article with a link back is welcome and needs no permission.

7. Limitation of liability

In plain terms: this is a free tic tac toe game, and you use it at your own risk.

The website and the application are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied. We do not warrant that they will meet your requirements, that they will run on every device, or that they will be free of defects.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Tic Tac Toe is not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential loss arising from your use of the website or the application — including lost data, lost time or a lost game.

Nothing here limits any liability that cannot lawfully be limited. Depending on where you live, you may have statutory consumer rights that these terms do not affect and are not intended to override.

8. Changes to the service and to these terms

These terms may be updated from time to time — if the game changes, or if something here turns out to be unclear. The date at the top of this page shows when they last changed, and continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated version.

We will not quietly introduce advertising, in-app purchases or data collection under cover of a terms update. If any of those ever changed, it would be stated plainly here and in the privacy policy, which describes what the software actually does today.

9. Contact

These terms apply to the Tic Tac Toe website and to the Android application com.shahbaz.tictactoe, published by Syed Shahbaz Hussain. Questions about them can go to support@syedshahbazhussain.com.

See also the privacy policy, which explains exactly what each version of the game stores and where.
